Twenty years ago I released an eight-track double 12” on DiY Discs with the imaginative title of Project One. I’d got to know DiY’s Pete and Rick (Digs & Woosh) through parties in Cardiff and gave them a demo with eight tracks on, not expecting much; it turned out they wanted to release the lot.

The tracks were all recorded in a bedroom in High Wycombe in 1998-99, while I was doing a work placement at Focusrite as part of my degree course. My setup was pretty basic - an Atari ST running Cubase, sequencing an Akai S2800 sampler and a Novation Bass Station Rack, with an Emu Proteus 2000 sound module and a Roland JD-800 synth added later. These were mixed through a Mackie 1402 with a cheapo Zoom effects unit and a Focusrite Green compressor, straight to DAT, monitoring through my hi-fi.

Project One was followed three years later by, yep, Project Two. This was a four-track 12” with two further tracks from the High Wycombe sessions, and two versions of a track called Ebb and Flow which were recorded later and mixed on a different setup, featuring live Rhodes and bass by a couple of uni pals. I’ve left these off this digital collection, as I think it works better as a snapshot of the 98/99 setup. I’ve done a little gentle re-mastering to balance the relative levels, I’ve changed the running order and I’ve slowed down a couple of the faster tracks.
